Biography

May 2005: After 23 years at Santa Rosa Junior College and 33 years as a college journalism professor, I've retired. Over the course of 40+ years in journalism I've been a sportswriter, freelance magazine writer, magazine/newspaper photographer, magazine editor, public relations and advertising copywriter/account executive, political campaign manager and political press secretary.

I've written for MacWeek, Whole Earth Review, Whole Earth Catalog, New Media, MicroTimes, Networker and the San Francisco Chronicle. Along the way I consulted in print and electronic publishing for Apple Computer Inc. and Silicon Graphics Inc.

I was the lead developer of Apple's ground-breaking digital video "News Navigator" project. I've done other multimedia projects, created website and blogs and run computer conferencing systems.

From 1987-96 I was a conference host on The WELL, the San Francisco-based conferencing system. I was also a founder and director of The River, another online conferencing system. I've been a speaker at a lot of conferences, most notably the 1995 Computers, Freedom and Privacy conference in San Francisco.
